da cassino: Such is the rivalry between Aston Villa and Birmingham that the transfer business between the two for Jota will likely have raised some eyebrows.
The Spaniard became the Villans’ first signing of the transfer window as they began their preparations for life back in the Premier League.
Jota has previously worked under Dean Smith at Brentford, a club where he found his best form in England, netting 12 times in 2016/17.
Similar performances haven’t been replicated since but his creative ability could be game-changing for not only his new club next season but for another of their new signings.
Also during the transfer window, Villa have announced the acquisition of Wesley for a club record fee of £22m, landing the Brazilian striker after a season where he scored 16 times in all competitions for Club Brugge.
Five of those goals were headers as he displayed his tremendous prowess in the air.
Standing at 6 ft 3, most of his qualities are shown by the sheer strength he possesses. But how does Jota come into this?
Assessing his stats last season, he racked up 11 assists for Birmingham. In the process, he made 2.1 key passes per game and also delivered 1.9 crosses on average.
If you compare the final stat to the rest of the Villa side, he’s ahead by a fair margin.
The highest number of crosses a match for Smith’s men last term came courtesy of Anwar El Ghazi and Conor Hourihane who both managed 1.1 each.
Therefore, if the Villans can get the best out of Jota, it will also benefit Wesley significantly.
The more crosses the former Birmingham man is able to deliver into the box, the higher chance their new striker will likely have of finding the net.
On one occasion last term, the 5 ft 11 forward managed six crosses in a game against Reading. He then made a further five in a 2-2 draw with Derby in April.

There were just six matches when Jota started that he failed to make a single cross, which in a season where he played 40 times is an impressive record.
There’s no guarantee that Wesley will hit the ground running after making the move from Belgian football, but if Jota plays it should definitely help him settle in.
Smith has got the best out of the Spanish winger in the past so he must do the same again next season if their new record signing is to be a success.
