As reported by Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are tracking the progress of Valencia midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, currently on loan from Inter Milan.
What’s the story?
Spurs have so far this season failed to find the form that made them such a force in the English Premier League last term and one of the noted problems has been their failure to find the right blend in the centre of midfield with previous top performers such as Mousa Dembele regressing rather than progressing.
The Belgian has had fitness issues over the last 18 months, missing a whole month of action this season already and failing to play an entire 90 minutes since August.
One potential replacement could be Geoffrey Kondogbia, who Sky Sports report has been the subject of Tottenham scouting in recent months and are interested in making him their key midfield man.
Rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, he’s within the budget of Tottenham and at just 24 years old could be a long-term solution to the Dembele problem, who has just 18 months left on his current deal at the club.
Good enough?
Kondogbia has already played for some illustrious teams across the continent, having spells at the likes of Monaco, Sevilla, Inter Milan and now Valencia, gathering plenty of top-flight experience that would serve him well in the English Premier League.
He’s excelled in La Liga this term, a key part of the Valencia side that are currently outpacing Atletico and Real Madrid in the table, five points behind league leaders Barcelona.
A player who is known for his defensive contribution first and foremost, he could provide some much needed stability to the Spurs midfield that could allow the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli to be at their creative best.
As a potential Mousa Dembele replacement, Spurs could do a lot worse.
