According to , Hojlund was determined to stay at United and fight for his place in the starting lineup under Amorim, while the club were negotiating a move with Napoli. He reluctantly flew to Italy on Sunday for medical, despite not fully approving of the deal.

Eventually, Hojlund penned a season-long loan deal with the Italian champions, who also have a conditional obligation to buy the striker next summer for €44 million (£38m/$51m). Once the Denmark international realised that his Old Trafford dream was over only after two seasons, the 22-year-old was left "heartbroken", with The Athletic also claiming that he believes he is better than the Red Devils' new No.9, Sesko. He wanted to prove his worth to Amorim and was ready to compete with the Slovenian forward.
